Tour 8 gardens in Marietta, including this one with a living link to a revolutionary witness tree [photos]

Inside a white house on the north side of Marietta, you’ll find a Civil War-era cooling system and walls more than 2 feet thick. Outside, in the gardens surrounding this historic home, you’ll find living history in the Baker family’s plants. A white oak’s roots run especially deep. It’s a descendant of the Donegal Witness Tree, a long-gone tree where people gathered in 1777, vowing to fight England to form a new country. This garden is one of eight on this year’s Marietta Garden Tour Sunday, June 25.

Take a tour of historic houses in and around Maytown, from log homes to a former bank

In one house, the original 1760s hearth was discovered behind modern cabinets. A block away is a home made of three connected buildings, each with its own history. Another house has its own vault with a floor tiled with 17,044 pennies, a nod to the building’s former life as a bank. These unique properties are in the same neighborhood in Maytown. On May 6, they’ll be part of a tour of houses, patios and gardens.
